Sustainability Policy

Updated March 2025

In a world of AI generated text we just want to say that this sustainability policy has been heartfelt and hand written by our founder, and lover of this planet, Rose. You will not find any green-washing here.

Here's a guide to how ROVE tries to minimise their impact on this beautiful planet.

The Fibres We Use

Wool is one of the most sustainable natural fibres available. Sheep are not intensively reared, and their wool is a renewable resource (ie. it grows back quickly.) Additionally, wool is a valuable by-product of the meat industry, ensuring minimal waste.

Not only is wool sustainable to produce, but it is also environmentally friendly at the end of its lifecycle. While we design our products to last for years with proper care, when their time finally comes, 100% natural wool biodegrades in the right conditions. Depending on soil, climate, and wool characteristics, decomposition can take as little as three to four months, releasing essential nutrients such as nitrogen, sulphur, and magnesium back into the soil.

Sheep play an important role in the natural carbon cycle by consuming organic carbon stored in plants and converting it into wool. In fact, 50% of the weight of wool is pure organic carbon. Additionally, wool textiles tend to be washed less frequently and at lower temperatures, further reducing their environmental impact.

Where Is Our Knitwear Made

We are proud that 100% of our products are made in Britain using a small-batch production process that prioritises sustainability and craftsmanship. Every stage, from initial design sketches to pressing, finishing, and labelling, is overseen by skilled artisans and designers.

In 2024, we moved into a larger, ground-floor studio to house new industrial knitting machinery, allowing us to bring our production in-house after our Manchester-based factory closed. Now, 90% of our goods—including jumpers, hats, scarves, blankets, and cushions—are made in Margate.

Our socks are manufactured in Derbyshire at a historic factory that has been knitting socks for over 100 years. By working with them during their seasonal downtime, we help maintain skilled jobs and support the heritage of the British textile industry.

Sheep Welfare

We ensure that the wool we use comes from farms that do not practise mulesing. Mulesing, the removal of skin from around the breech of a sheep to prevent flystrike, is an unnecessary and painful procedure that can be avoided through regular shearing. While non-mulesed wool is more expensive, we are committed to sourcing from ethical farms that prioritise animal welfare.

Recycling & Packaging

We are committed to minimising plastic use and have initiated discussions with our suppliers about reducing plastic packaging. While some plastics remain unavoidable, we take steps to reuse and recycle whenever possible:

  • Plastic cones from yarn are reused or returned to the factory for reuse.
  • Protective polythene bags are repurposed to safeguard our yarn from moths and later used to bundle wholesale deliveries.
  • Large shipping boxes are reused for stockist orders or repurposed in Rose’s home compost to suppress weeds.
  • Our mail orders are shipped in 100% recycled, recyclable, and biodegradable paper bags, and all promotional materials are printed on 100% recycled card with vegetable-based inks.

Minimising Waste

Unlike garment made from woven fabrics (like shirts and jeans), knitwear production generates minimal waste, as each item is knitted to shape rather than cut from a larger piece of fabric. This means that the exact amount of yarn needed is used, with no excess discarded. Wool products also have significantly longer lifespans than many other textiles—when well cared for, a high-quality wool jumper or scarf can last for generations.

Wool is one of the most recycled fibres in the world. Despite accounting for only 1.3% of all textile fibres, wool makes up 5% of the recycled fibre market. And at the very end of its lifespan, wool naturally biodegrades, releasing nutrients back into the earth.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

We are constantly looking for ways to minimise our carbon footprint:

  • All our materials are sourced within the UK, reducing transportation emissions.
  • 90% of our goods are produced in-house, further cutting transport-related emissions.
  • We primarily use Royal Mail for UK deliveries, as they have the lowest reported carbon emissions per parcel, thanks to their reliance on foot delivery.
